Last week Gallery 1988 teamed up with Adult Swim and kicked off the new year with one hell of a show. It was a huge honor to participate again along side some of the best names in the poster world, I just wish I could have been there in person! At first it seemed like there were too many cool themes to put a spin on, but in the end when I hear "Adult Swim" Space Ghost is always the first image to pop in my head, so I had to take on the iconic classic. This is what I came up with.

Spectre / New Art Print

It's been a couple of months, but finally I was able to get my shit together and begin screen printing my own designs again! I've been sitting on a couple of ideas for this occasion, and luckily after a couple of late nights I was able to squeeze out a few art prints.

"Spectre" is a 12.5" by 19" screen print on French 100# paper with a regular edition of 50 for $20, and a blue variant edition of 30 for $25 available through my ETSY SHOP.

Originally inspired by the Green Man motif, this ended up turning into something a bit more evil and ornate. Hope you dig it!

It wasn't until a couple weeks later that Craig, a friend of the shop, walked in holding this laser etched beauty! Since I didn't even design the image with this process in mind, I am really itching to try out something crazy this winter...hopefully this is just the beginning!

I feel like I've been sitting on this project for a while now, but since last night was the opening night for "Please Post Bills", a Bill Murray tribute show at Gallery 1988 Melrose, I don't have to wait any longer! Here are the specs:

I am super excited with how these turned out, Half and Half did a great job on the printing, the transparent orange layer looks even better than I expected. Mon Oncle

Although it's almost the end of the month, here is my submission for The Silver Screen Society and their October movie, Mon Oncle, a french comedy film by Jaques Tati. In Mon Oncle, the main character Monsieur Helot visits his sister, brother-in-law, and nephew and struggles to fit in to their technology driven life style. I was worried how well a comedy would translate through sub-titles, but after watching it several times and pausing youtube videos for hours on end I ended up loving the film. I meant to throw in the dachshund in the plaid vest but time got the better of me...so if you a see a wiener dog wandering around in a future illustration you will know why!

My submission for an upcoming Bill Murray tribute show: Please Post Bills opening at Gallery 1988 in LA on 11/3/11. It was a close call between doing a Ghostbusters piece or a Life Aquatic print, but I think I made the right decision, the nautical theme was a blast to do. This show should be amazing from the few early entries I have seen so far, expect more details after the opening!

I just received this pleasant surprise in the mail today thanks to the amazing printers at The Half and Half! This little sneak peak is only a glimpse of one of three Halloween prints I will be showing at the Rivet Gallery alongside Ryan Brinkerhoff (Bandito Design) and Clinton Reno. I have been a huge fan of both artists for a while now and am extremely excited to see how everything works together as a whole!
The opening reception for the show is Saturday, October 1st (Gallery Hop for those of you in Columbus) and will run through the 31st. If your in town stop by that Saturday, say hi and pick up a print or two! If not, prints will be available for purchase online through Rivet's online store.

Microcosmos Art Print

Last fall I did an illustration titled Weirdo, my reinterpretation of a 70's underground comic by R. Crumb. That piece never made it to paper as a screen print, so I thought it would be fun to re-work the character and turn it into more of a self portrait art print. The title, Microcosmos, was inspired by a french nature documentary I watched while sketching ideas for this piece. Filming the world of bugs at a micro view with no real narration, Microcosmos is beautiful, surreal and immersing. Of course, the idea of a smaller world within a larger snuck it's way in and I had a blast hiding tons of little details in this piece. Hopefully this will make it to paper soon!

Der Froschkönig: The Frog Prince

It has been a couple months in the works but I can finally show you one of my most time consuming projects to date. Earlier this year I was approached by fellow print lover, Keith Rose, about creating work for a potential online gallery he was starting called Deqqo. Deqqo commissions designers and fine artists working in the screen printing medium to create works reinterpreting classic folklore stories familiar in popular American culture. I was immediately excited about this project considering mythology and symbolism are things I have always loved exploring in my work and I thought the story of The Frog Prince would be a good place to start. I liked the idea of going back to the roots of these original tales and finding important details that have become lost over time when being watered down for popular American audiences. In this case the original tale, Der Froschkönig, has early Germanic roots, and told a much darker story than the one we are familiar with, where an act of violence sparked the transformation instead of an act of love. With this piece I wanted to create an image that depicted the frog at the exact moment of transformation, with the entire story at that point flashing before his eyes as he began to morph from frog to prince.

Print specs: 3 color screen print on Banana Split French Paper, 24" x 18", limited edition of 125, signed and numbered.

The Devil's Backbone Poster

Last week I received a new poster in the mail. This poster collaboration by Aaron Horkey and Vania Zouravliov for the movie The Devil's Backbone is seriously one of the most amazing prints I have ever seen in person. Commissioned by the Alamo Drafthouse, these prints were released at a random time, it's release only being announced the day before in one Twitter update, and they sold out in like 5 minutes. Needless to say I am super pumped I was lucky enough to purchase one before they sold out, and I am too excited not to share some detail shots.

Both Zouravliov and Horkey lay really low and don't have much of an official internet presence (which is pretty rad this day and age), but you can browse through the new Mondo Archives site to view some other great posters by these two by clicking HERE. This poster was actually the first time I heard of the film, but after watching THE TRAILER I can't wait to check it out!

Last fall I created a piece named Candlegoat, inspired by the title of a song by drone/doom band Sunn O))). Although not as dark as the song it was inspired by, it was a blast to design. That piece was a huge turning point for me, but never made it into the real world as a screen print. I always told my self that if I ever found some free time I would re-work it for print, and here it is. Hopefully this piece will make it to paper as a 5 color screen print in the near future!

This was a huge weekend. Graduation, Agora dropoff, and the Pinchflat Poster Blowout at Wildgoose Creative. Luckily I had a good amount of time to hang out at Pinchflat and meet some of the other designers and absorb some great posters! I didn't even bring my own camera, but luckily Jeremy Slagle was at the event taking a ton of photos which he was kind enough to share with me to blog about. Sweatin' 4 Year Anniversary Poster

Columbus' dance party, Sweatin', will be reaching it's four year anniversary this month and I was asked to do a special poster for the very special occasion! I usually don't get many chances to do photo collage, but this seemed to be the perfect chance to do something out of the ordinary for me. We used the headlining DJ, Deathface as a source of inspiration and this is what I came up with. I look forward to May 27th, it should be a blast!

I pulled this face from the Wierdo illustration I did a couple months back and reworked it a little to use on the back of a business card design. Although I still really like the shaping I'm trying to find ways to give my vector illustrations a bit more depth and personality by bringing my own textures into the design. I can't wait to do this on a bigger more detailed illustration I have in the works...

This time last year I was working on designing my first real screen print, but it wasn't until this weekend that I got to put it onto paper.

El Dia de los Muertos

This piece was about connecting mood, theme, and visual rhythm between images and type choice. The whole piece says MUERTE (I even try to hint at the M) but as you move left to right the type evolves out of the mexican Day of the Dead skulls. If you look closely there is also a candle that repeats itself in the back ground, at first bright, flickers, then burns out completely. I absolutely love the mexican styled skulls and I can't wait to try my own versions again in a more loose painting.
